FAQ

Common questions.

Everything you need to know about MonoMoji.

General

What is MonoMoji?+

MonoMoji is a writing system for the digital age. It adds a visual layer to alphabetic text, turning words into compact shapes that can be recognized at a glance. It works as a Chrome extension that overlays these shapes onto any webpage you visit.

Is this a replacement for the alphabet?+

No. MonoMoji is a layer on top of the existing alphabet, not a replacement. The underlying text never changes. You choose which words appear as shapes and which stay as standard text.

Is MonoMoji a font?+

No. A font changes how letters look. MonoMoji changes how words are represented. Each word becomes a single compact shape built from three block types. It is a different writing system, not a typeface.

Is MonoMoji a new language?+

No. MonoMoji uses the same 26 letters of the English alphabet. Every shape maps directly to a familiar English word. There is no new vocabulary, grammar, or syntax to learn.

How it works

How does the three-block system work?+

Each letter in MonoMoji is represented by a vertical stack of three blocks. Each block can be in one of three states: empty, solid, or dot. This gives 27 possible combinations (3 x 3 x 3), which is exactly enough to encode all 26 letters of the English alphabet plus the space character.

Can different people see the same text differently?+

Yes. Since MonoMoji runs on your personal device, you control which words appear as shapes. Two people reading the same webpage can have completely different visual experiences. The shared text stays the same; the visual layer is personal.

Do I need to learn everything before I start?+

No. You can start with just a few common words like "the" and "and". The Hybrid Reader lets you choose which words become shapes. As you get comfortable, you add more words to your personal library at your own pace.

Usage

Will this work on every website?+

The Chrome extension overlays shapes on visible text on any webpage. PDFs and images are not supported. The extension does not modify the actual content of any page.

Does it work on mobile?+

Currently MonoMoji is available as a Chrome desktop extension. A mobile app is in development.

What languages are supported?+

MonoMoji currently supports the English alphabet (26 letters). Support for other Latin-alphabet languages is planned for future releases.

Privacy and security

Is my reading data sent anywhere?+

No. Word counts and reading progress are stored locally on your device. Cloud sync is opt-in and only available if you create an account.

Do I need an account?+

No. You can use MonoMoji without an account. The free version includes two words ("the" and "and"). Creating an account unlocks your full personal library and syncs your progress across devices.

Future

Is MonoMoji free?+

The Chrome extension is free to install and use. The basic experience with two starter words is available to everyone. Additional features and expanded word libraries are available with an account.

What is coming next?+

A mobile app is in development. Beyond reading, we are exploring a writing layer that lets you compose in MonoMoji, and dual readability for environments where both humans and machines need to read the same text.
