MonoMoji

FAQ

Common questions.

Everything you need to know about MonoMoji.

Is MonoMoji a replacement for the alphabet?+

Not exactly. MonoMoji is a layer on top of the existing alphabet, not a replacement. The underlying text never changes. You choose which words appear as shapes and which stay as standard text.

Is MonoMoji a font?+

No. A font changes how letters look. MonoMoji changes how words are represented. Each word becomes a single compact shape built from three block types. It is a different writing system, not a typeface.

Is MonoMoji a new language?+

No. MonoMoji uses the same 26 letters of the English alphabet. Every shape maps directly to a familiar English word. There is no new vocabulary, grammar, or syntax to learn.

Is MonoMoji easy to learn?+

Yes. MonoMoji starts with just two words: "THE" and "AND." As you get comfortable, the Hybrid Reader lets you add more words at your own pace. You do not need to learn many shapes before it becomes useful. There is no pressure to memorize everything upfront.

Who is MonoMoji for?+

MonoMoji is for people who are curious about new ways of reading on digital screens. It is still an experimental project, so it is especially suited for early adopters and anyone interested in visual writing systems, new reading interfaces, or the future of text.

Can different people see the same text differently?+

Yes. Since MonoMoji runs on your personal device, you control which words appear as shapes. Two people reading the same webpage can have completely different visual experiences. The shared text stays the same; the visual layer is personal.

How will others read my messages?+

MonoMoji only appears on your device, with your settings. Any text you send reaches the other person as standard alphabetic text. If they also use MonoMoji, they will see your message through their own personal MonoMoji layer.

Does MonoMoji change the webpage itself?+

No. MonoMoji does not edit, rewrite, or publish any webpage content. It only adds a visual layer inside your browser.

Will this work on every website?+

The Chrome extension overlays shapes on visible text on most webpages. PDFs, images, and some embedded content, such as iframe, may not be supported. The extension does not modify the actual content of any page.

Does it work on mobile?+

Currently, MonoMoji is available as a Chrome desktop extension. A mobile app is coming very soon, so stay tuned.

What languages are supported?+

MonoMoji currently supports the English alphabet (26 letters). Support for other Latin-alphabet languages is planned for future releases.

Can I turn MonoMoji off?+

Yes. You can turn MonoMoji on or off whenever you want. You can also add, remove, or change the words in your personal library at any time.

Do I need an account?+

An account is required to build your personal MonoMoji library and customize your reading experience. Without an account, you can still try the Chrome extension with the default words "THE" and "AND." To add more words, save your choices, and personalize MonoMoji, you will need to create an account.

How much does it cost?+

MonoMoji is free to install and use. The core reading experience available today will remain free.

Is my reading data sent anywhere?+

MonoMoji stores only word frequency data, which is used to provide personalized recommendations based on the words you see most often. We do not save the actual content you read, and we do not record the websites or page URLs you visit.
